SOIL SAMPLING

Soil testing is the single most important guide to unlocking your lands potential by determining the nutrient content and composition.

The key reasons for this are as follows:

SAMPLE TECHNIQUE

Number of soil samples: Collect soil cores from across the sampling area, either by following a ‘W’ pattern across the area and within geo located areas.

Soil sampling depth: Depth of soil cores:
Arable and field vegetables – 15 cm depth.
Long term grassland – 7.5 cm depth.

Sampling equipment: In arable or vegetable systems, a gouge corer or screw auger can be used for collecting samples. In grassland systems, a gouge corer is used.

• Soil Analysis Required: Use an accredited laboratory for soil analysis:
– Standard analysis (pH, P potassium, K phosphorus, Mg magnesium).
– Organic Matter.
– Soil type/ classification.
– Micro nutrients (Boron, Copper, Zinc, Manganese, Iodine, Cobalt, Selenium etc..).
– Heavy metals.
– Soil borne Pests (Wireworm, Wheat Bulb Fly, Potato cyst nematodes PCN).

W Soil sampling

25 soil cores are collected at regular intervals whilst following a ‘W’ pattern across the field or area. These cores are amalgamated and analysed as a single soil sample for the field or area. Soil analysis results are returned with recommendations for fertiliser required. 

gps soil sampling

GPS enabled quad bike is used to locate centres of soil sampling areas, commonly every 1ha but areas can be as requested by farmer. Soil cores are collected from each soil sample area, from 16 to 25 depending on area size. The soil samples are analysed by an ISO standard laboratory and fertiliser recommendations given. Soil sample results from GPS collected soils are returned with recommendations for fertiliser required, recommendations can be returned in the format to suit the variable rate applicator to be used.
